GARY’S STORY

Gary reading a disability discrimination leaflet

Gary reading a disability discrimination leaflet

I was employed as a carer and informed my employer that I had dyslexia, and had asked for the employer to consider making reasonable adjustments for me by allowing an organisation to come into the premises and assess what equipment would help me with any work which I did which involved reading or writing on behalf of our patients. My employer would not allow the organisation to come in and assess me, this I believed to have been discriminatory and complained. I was subsequently dismissed for another issue loosely related to my frustration around not getting adequate support at work.

I contacted Northamptonshire Rights and Equality Council (NREC) who lodged a claim for disability discrimination, and unlawful deduction of wages on my behalf to an Employment Tribunal and sent a questionnaire on my behalf to my former employer. I was paid compensation to prevent the matter going to a full Employment Tribunal.  I would not have been able to have successfully challenged my employer had I not received the assistance from Northamptonshire Rights and Equality Council.
