This event has contributions from black history campaigner Donna Parmer-Smith and the renowned journalist and trade unionist Roger McKenzie
The nights of 22 to 23 August 1791, in Santo Domingo (today Haiti and the Dominican Republic) saw the beginning of the uprising that would play a crucial role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
It is against this background that the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is commemorated on 23 August each year.
This year, Northamptonshire Rights and Equality Council is commemorating the day with this online event.
Donna Parmer-Smith wrote in our blog in July 2020 on this theme. You can take a look at her thoughts and analysis here.
Roger McKenzie has also written about the need to use the commemoration as a call for justice. More of his thoughts on this are here.
Join this event, and be part of our action, campaigning for racial justice.
