Researcher – Summer of ’76 Project

About the Role
We are seeking a passionate and committed Researcher to play a key role in the Summer of ’76 Project, an exciting initiative focused on preserving and celebrating the history, heritage, and lived experiences of Northamptonshire’s Black communities during the 1970s and 1980s.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful, community-led research—capturing stories, safeguarding records, and helping ensure that this important history is preserved for future generations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and deliver an annual research work programme
- Conduct original research into Black community experiences in Northamptonshire during the 1970s and 1980s
- Develop and support the oral history programme, ensuring best practice standards
- Build and maintain strong relationships with:
- Black community organisations and individuals
- Schools, voluntary and statutory agencies
- Support the preservation and digitisation of heritage materials, including documents, photographs, and ephemera
- Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers, guiding their research and oral history work
- Manage day-to-day project budgets and organise training sessions
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has experience in research, heritage, or community history projects
- Understands (or is keen to learn) oral history methodologies
- Is confident working with diverse communities and building trusted relationships
- Is passionate about preserving cultural heritage and amplifying underrepresented voices
Reporting & Structure
- Reports to: Chief Executive
- Works alongside: Project staff, volunteers, community partners, and NREC Board/Steering Group members
- Responsible for: Project volunteers

About the Role
We are excited to recruit a dynamic and creative Community Engagement Officer to help bring the Summer of ’76 Project to life.
This inspiring project explores and celebrates the lived experiences of Northamptonshire’s Black communities in the 1970s and 1980s. You will play a central role in transforming research into engaging public programmes—connecting communities, schools, and audiences with powerful heritage stories.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and delivery of community engagement activities and events
- Create dynamic outputs such as:
- Short films and podcasts
- Educational resources for schools and youth groups
- A touring exhibition and heritage trail
- Workshops and a final commemorative event and play
- Oversee the day-to-day running of the project and supervise volunteers
- Build strong relationships with:
- Black community organisations and individuals
- Schools, voluntary and statutory agencies
- Lead on public relations and communications, including working with media
- Monitor progress, evaluate impact, and contribute to reports and annual reviews
Leadership & Coordination
- Recruit, support, and supervise project volunteers
- Ensure high standards of delivery across all activities
- Organise and chair meetings, ensuring effective communication across stakeholders
- Work collaboratively with the NREC Board, Steering Group, and Chief Executive
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking someone who:
- Has experience in community engagement, outreach, or cultural/heritage projects
- Is confident delivering creative public programmes and events
- Has strong skills in communication, editing digital media, partnership working, and stakeholder engagement
- Can manage projects, people, and competing priorities effectively
- Is passionate about community history, equality, and cultural representation
